Curriculum:
The core emphasis of our curriculum is play. Educational research supports the importance of imaginative play in a child’s development. Play is widely recognized to: cultivate problem-solving and critical thinking skills, promote language development and physical coordination, and develop conflict resolution skills and emotional maturity*. The American Academy of Pediatrics recently urged a return to free play, as it is connected to every aspect of a child’s well being.
Our daily activities are centered on weekly themes. Themes come directly from the children’s interests, a parent’s professional or personal talents, and also from current events. Some examples of weekly themes are:
Farm
Drums
Olympics
Seeds
Animal Tracks
Solar System
Dinosaurs
Doctor Week/Medical
Children experience these topics through special guests, role-playing, crafts and even snacks that are tied to the subjects. Experiential learning and creativity abound in the projects that support these themes.
